On December 5, 2009, the authors and illustrator of HAPPY DOG: Caring for Your Dog's Body, Mind and Spirit (New American Library/Penguin: 9/1/09) will be appearing at Hot Doug's Restaurant to help raise money for the Trio Animal Foundation (www.trioanimalfoundation.org). One hundred percent of the proceeds from book sales will be donated to Chicago's Trio Animal Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization that assists shelters, rescues and individuals by paying the medical bills of homeless pets.

Hot Doug's, the celebrated Chicago restaurant specializing hot dogs and other encased meats, is hosting the event to celebrate HAPPY DOG illustrator Justin Graham (30), who has worked as a server at the restaurant for 5 years. Graham's illustrations pepper the text and playfully express the dog care concepts in the book. "I wanted every reader to relate to the character. Fido is meant to represent all dogs, whether you have a pedigreed poodle or a mutt." Said Graham, who has been drawing since he was five or six years old.

HAPPY DOG is Graham's first professional illustrating job. "Working on HAPPY DOG was my big break and has helped me get other work.  I wasn't expecting a career as an illustrator, but I've been blessed with one because of the book."

Hot Doug's owner, chef and Chicago native Doug Sohn has gained national acclaim and cult status with his hot dogs, encased meat and duck fat fries. Hot Doug's has been praised in The New York Times, USA Today, Bon Appetit, Gourmet, The Chicago Tribune, The Sun Times, Time Out Chicago and on television numerous times. Celebrity chef and best-selling author Anthony Bourdain named Hot Doug's as one of the 13 places to eat before you die. Bourdain also featured Hot Doug's on his celebrated Travel Channel show No Reservations.

HAPPY DOG is written by two Chicagoans. Billy Rafferty is a nationally recognized and award-winning principal stylist at Doggy Dooz pet styling salon, whose clients include Oprah Winfrey, celebrity chef Art Smith, MSNBC's Tamron Hall, Chicago politicians and a Broadway producer. In addition to being a Master Pet Stylist (MPS), Certified Master Groomer (CMG), a Dermatech Specialist (DTS), and a Companion Animal Hygenist (CAH), Billy is a sanctioned grooming judge and a highly regarded speaker and lecturer on all matters canine. Jill Cahr is an accomplished writer and has been involved with Chicago-area animal shelters and animal charities for over a decade. They both donate their time grooming stray dogs at Chicago's Animal Care & Control, and work with a number of other animal welfare groups. Their website is www.happydogland.com.

In HAPPY DOG Rafferty and Cahr offer up Rafferty's expert advice in a friendly, funny, accessible style. They deliver the real dirt on how to not only physically and mentally take care of your dog, but how to make her feel like a valued, loved member of the family-in other words, a happy dog for all her days. In addition to teaching readers step-by-step how to care for their dogs at home, HAPPY DOG offers detailed advice about nutrition, safety, emergencies, traveling, playing and bonding with a furry pal, daycare, how to choose a veterinarian, trainer and groomer and much more.
